Frequently Asked Questions

Everything people ask before and after downloading images from spreadsheets.

How do I download images from an Excel or spreadsheet file?
Open the Sheet Image Downloader desktop app, load your spreadsheet file (Excel .xlsx, Google Sheets export, or CSV), and the app reads the Image URL column automatically. Configure your output folder and click Start Batch. All images are downloaded locally to your machine — no browser or cloud upload is involved.
Which spreadsheet formats are supported?
The app supports .xlsx (Excel), .xls (legacy Excel), Google Sheets exports saved as .xlsx or .csv, and CSV files. The only required column is Image URL; File Name and Folder Path are optional columns that help you organize the downloaded images into subfolders.
Does Sheet Image Downloader upload my files or data to any server?
No. Sheet Image Downloader is a fully local desktop application. Your spreadsheet file, output folder, and downloaded images never leave your computer. There is no cloud processing, no account required, and no data collection of any kind.
What happens when some image downloads fail?
Version 1.0.0 generates a run report listing every failed URL with the reason. You can export the failed URL list as a CSV and use the Retry Failed Only mode to re-run just those URLs — without re-processing the entire sheet. This is especially useful for large supplier or catalog image jobs.
What are the required and optional spreadsheet columns?
Required: Image URL (the direct link to the image). Optional: File Name (custom name for the saved image, including extension like .jpg or .png); Folder Path (relative or absolute path for organizing images into subfolders, e.g. category/subfolder). All three work with any supported format (.xlsx, .xls, .csv).
Can I rename images based on product SKU or filename?
Yes. If your spreadsheet has a File Name column, the app will use those names instead of the default URL-based filenames. This is ideal for organizing product images by SKU, ASIN, or any custom naming scheme you already use in your catalog.
How do I organize downloaded images into subfolders?
Add a Folder Path column to your spreadsheet with values like category/spring-2026 or products/apparel. The app creates these subfolders automatically inside your chosen output directory. You can mix relative paths (relative to the output folder) and absolute paths.
Is the app free to use?
Yes, Sheet Image Downloader is free to download and use. There is no paywall, no subscription, and no usage limit. You get the full batch download capability without creating an account.
What operating systems are supported?
Sheet Image Downloader is available for Windows and macOS. The Windows version is distributed as a standalone .exe installer. The macOS version is distributed as a .dmg disk image. Both run fully offline without requiring an internet connection during use.
Why are some product images not downloading?
The most common reasons are: the image URL returns an HTTP error (404, 403, or timeout); the URL points to a JavaScript-rendered page instead of a direct image file; the image requires authentication headers or cookies that a direct URL cannot provide; or the image host blocks non-browser clients. The run report will show the specific error code for each failed URL so you can identify which problem applies to each batch.
How do I update the app when a new version is available?
Download the latest version from sheetimagedownloader.com and install it as normal. On macOS, drag the new app into your Applications folder. Your existing spreadsheet files and output folder settings are preserved across updates. There is no auto-updater built in.
How many images can I download at once?
There is no hard limit set by the app itself. The practical limit depends on your computer's memory and the number of URLs in your spreadsheet. For large batches of 1,000+ URLs, the app processes them in a queue and writes a run report upon completion so you can retry any failures separately.
